Divorce MediationEnding your marriage and moving into the next chapter of your lives as separate individuals can be one of the most difficult transitions in life. Mediation can transform the process, removing the animosity and creating a productive neutral environment for decision making. Together we can invent options for those tough issues and decisions.
HowOften we meet separately first so that I can get acquainted with your perspective and learn how you made decisions in your marriage. From these initial interviews, we can set up the mediation sessions in the most productive manner so that we can find ways to settle the issues and get your needs met and the needs of your children. When the parties are able to reach an agreement, I write up the terms of the agreement and strongly recommend that each of the parties have the agreement reviewed by an attorney to be drafted into the judgment of divorce. If attorneys are already involved, I welcome their participation in the mediation and will work closely with them throughout the process. We can also work with accountants, therapists, child development specialists, and co-mediators as appropriate.
WhenMediation is possible at any stage of the divorce process. Sometimes couples choose to meet in mediation before filing divorce papers so that they can work through the decisions without the pressures of the adversarial court process. Often the court orders the couple to mediation during the process of hearings and motions. And mediation is an option after the divorce is final, to work through questions of parenting and custody or to deal with changing circumstances.
FeesUsually there is a deposit required to cover the initial separate interviews, the preparation, and the first half day. Additional sessions can be billed by the hour or by the session, depending on the circumstances.
Testimonials --- From a divorce mediation client:
“I want you to also know that you are great at what you do. I’ve noticed that you’re able to word things in the least abrasive way. Truly, it’s a lot easier to work with that.”
From a paralegal in a divorce mediation case: “Thanks Wanda, you’re the best.”
From a family care/decision making case: “You helped us so much when you came for the first visit, if only to keep us from drinking and crying!!!”
From an attorney in a divorce mediation: “You put them in an environment where they both felt safe and you kept them both talking. You were neutral.”
