At what point do we realize we have changed roles with our parents? Probably at the same point our parents look upon us as both caregiver and jailor at the same time!

We are all living longer and healthier and for most of us this is a blessing. However for some it becomes a nightmare.

Will I outlive my income?
Do I have enough health insurance?
What will I do when I can’t drive any more? Who will take care of me? Where will I live? Who can I trust?

And for the care giver the choices and dilemmas are legion. How can I afford to take care of my children and my parents? How can I stand to move Dad into my home? What will people say if I place Mom in assisted living? What is the right thing to do?

Navigating a carefully balanced path between becoming the decision maker, the accountant, the attorney, the child/parent while still allowing the parent/child to retain their dignity and independence is a journey many of us will have to take.

That path can become a mine field when siblings disagree ~ or the parent has physical and/or mental challenges ~ and especially when financial redistribution and assets are involved.

Emotions cloud judgement ~ too many old issues can resurface at a time of high stress.
Difficult decisions need calm minds. A creative resolution to real, or potential, conflict can set everyone’s mind at rest, leaving all parties involved satisfied that their voice has been heard and their feelings and opinions valued.

Fear of loss of control =
~ the realization that I am no longer able to make decisions for myself
~ the knowledge that there are more days behind me than in front

The purpose of creative mediation is
~ to give back a sense of security and ease to all parties involved.
